"When I started developing the requirements for an EMS solution for our products, I took the approach of putting myself in my customer's shoes and prepared a requirements document which had the following details.
- Functionality of the EMS and how it would be used by our customers
- Device interface points
- Look and feel of the EMS GUI
- Performance requirements
While framing the requirements, I also experimented with some of the standard products in the market to get a better understanding of the standard features that were being offered. After arriving at a decent set of requirements, I started evaluating various EMS solutions that were available in the market, which I felt would suit my technical requirements, my timeframe and the budget, that I had.
While I was doing my vendor evaluation, in parallel, I sent my requirements document to my customers to get feedback from them. As you would have guessed, I got plenty of suggestions! One thing I noticed that was even though my customers did not have many changes to the functionality that I was come up with; they preferred a different look and feel to the EMS GUI. Needless to say, I had to revise my requirements document a few more times to ensure that the GUI met my customer's requirements.
Whenever I updated my requirements document, I also sent it to all the vendors that I was evaluating and got their revised quotes. To my surprise I noticed that the quotes from most of the vendors except Dhyan kept changing (actually increasing). I thought it was a mistake on the part of Dhyan and asked specifically about the price again. I was informed that since DNMS was components based, the changes could be accommodated without a price increase. That pretty much sold me on DNMS and Dhyan!
Also once the project was underway I had to make a few more changes and again those were accommodated without a major price increase. Dhyan's approach really took the pressure off me since I did not have to be clairvoyant and get my requirements right on day one! I believe by using DNMS, in addition to being flexible and responsive to our customers, we were able to provide a different look and feel to our EMS and differentiate ourselves in the market place."
